May 17, 2010: Research Reports

We have spent our time in the computer lab for the last two weeks doing research on our animals, and almost everyone finished finding all of their information. Today your child brought home their research packets with a letter from me. Any research that was not completed at school, needs to be completed at home. Parents, you need to go over your child’s research and check that they have everything they need. You also need to help them check their spelling, capitalization and punctuation. Research packets are due back to school by next Monday, May 24th. We will begin writing our research papers that day and if your child does not have their research packets at school, they will not be able to start their reports. These reports are a required writing for second grade and will be used as part of their writing grades for report cards. If your child finishes editing their packets, they may bring them back to school early. If your child is still doing research, I have included links to the safe sites that we used in the computer lab, just click on them below.

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP WITH THIS PROJECT.

May 16, 2010: Weekly Reminders

1. SPELLING REVIEW: We are officially done with our spelling units. We will be reviewing all of the words from this year for the next two weeks. On Monday, we will have a pretest of the first 70 words. The test on them will be on Friday. If you get 100% on Monday’s preview, you do not have to take the test on Friday. Whatever words you miss on Monday, will be the ones that you will be tested on on Friday.

2. FISH TEST: We will be having a small test on our fish unit on Monday. Your child should have brought home the review packet last Thursday.

3. MATH TEST: We will be having our Unit 9 math test on Monday. Your child should have brought home several review sheets last week. Please practice measuring to the 1/2 inch and centimeter. Also, make sure you know the difference between area and perimeter.

4. LIBRARY: We have library on Monday, don’t forget to bring your books back!!!

5. EARLY RELEASE: We will be having an Early Release Day on Wednesday, dismissal will be at 1:30.

6. FIELD TRIP MONEY: We will be visiting the Detroit Zoo on May 27th. The money, $8.00, is due by Monday. Please make sure that your child brings it to school if you have not paid yet. I will be sending in the money after school to get our tickets.

May 14, 2010: Animal Sorting Game

I just found this great animal characteristics sorting game. It goes along perfect with our animal unit. You have to sort animal characteristics into their correct group; mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians, and fish. I know we haven’t gotten to all of the animal groups yet, but I think you’ll do fine. You can also click here and it will take you to a website that has several different animal games.  Try them out and leave us a comment and let us know what you think of  them!!!

May 14, 2010: Rainbow Similes

This week we revisited similes. A simile is a figure of speech consisting of a comparison of 2 objects using like or as. Children are encouraged to use similes in their writings to “spice” up their writing. This week, we used the colors of the rainbow to write similes and then added them onto a rainbow. Here are a few examples of what we did.
