Mrs. Short's Second Grade

This week we are working on Unit 16 in Spelling. Today, your child should have brought home their pretest and homework sheet. Please remember that spelling homework is due back by Friday each week. Yesterday, we had our third meeting with the Math Club. Our focus was on time. Mrs. Laidlaw read a great book called Game Time! Then we each got a clock and Mrs. Short and Mrs. Laidlaw told us different times and we had to show it on our clocks, then we each won a pencil. Then we got to go to a bunch of different time centers. We each got a packet with games in it to help us practice time at home. Just a reminder, there is no Math Club next Friday, we will meet again on February 11th.

On Friday, we had two wonderful ladies visit us from the MSU Extension Center. They did a wonderful program in our classroom. They taught us all about water, water conservation, and the water cycle. Here are a few pictures from the program.

Yesterday, we were lucky enough to have Tyler’s mom come in and read to us. She read us a book called, Happy Valentine’s Day Mouse! She also brought us each a Valentine treat bag. A big thank you to Tyler’s mom for coming in!!!

1. LIBRARY: Don’t forget that we have library on Monday…So, don’t forget your books!!

2. COFFEE CANS: We are going to be making our Valentine card holders soon and we are in need of large coffee cans. Please send in any that you may have at home as soon as possible. THANKS!!!

3. ABSENT: My daughter Kayla’s dance team is dancing at Nationals in Florida, so I will be out from February 3-7. Mrs. Gee will be subbing for me. She was my student teacher 2 years ago and is very familiar with how things run in my classroom. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact her while I am gone.

4. FIELD  TRIP: We will be visiting the Morley Candy Factory on February 24th. If you would like to chaperone you need to send back the sheet saying so. The note will come home next week. I can only take 5 chaperones.

5. SELF-ESTEEM PROJECT: The February self-esteem project will be coming home on Monday. It is due back to school by next Friday.

6. EARLY RELEASE: Next Thursday, February 3rd, is an Early Release Day. Dismissal will be at 1:30.

7.  MATH CLUB: Just a reminder, there will be no Math Club next Friday, February 4th. We will resume on Friday, February 11th.

8. SCIENCE TEST: We have finished up our unit on Weather and will be having a test on the unit on Monday. Yesterday, your child should have brought home a study packet, please help your child study for the test.

Since there was no no school on Monday, and I am out sick today, there will not be a spelling unit this week. We will resume spelling next week.

1. NO SCHOOL: Just a reminder, there is no school on Monday. Enjoy your day off!!

2. LIBRARY: Since there is no school on Monday, please remember to bring your library books back to school on Tuesday. Mrs. Kuras will switch them for the books you picked out last Thursday.

3. BOOK TREASURE: Don’t forget, you need to bring  back your book treasure envelope and retelling sheet on Tuesday.

Friday, after school, Mrs. Laidlaw and I had our second meeting with the Math Club. This week we focused on place value. Mrs. Laidlaw read a book called, A Place For Zero. We played a group “wrap around” game then we got to work at some place value centers. Everyone got to take home a game packet that had lots of games to help practice place value. We hope that everyone had a good time!!
