Mrs. Short's Second Grade

Well, today was our last day of school. It was a great school year!!! I really enjoyed having you all in my class this year. Don’t forget what I said today…..keep visiting the blog this summer, I’ll be putting on some games for you to play when you are looking for something to do!!! Also, don’t forget to send me an email and let me know what you are up to this summer. MOST IMPORTANT…..don’t forget to READ, READ, READ!!!! I found this poem online and thought it was appropriate for today.

Great Expectations

It’s time to say goodbye

Our year has come to an end.

I’ve made more cherished memories

and many more new friends.

I’ve watched your child learn and grow

and change from day to day.

I hope that all the things we’ve done

Have helped in some small way.

So, it’s with happy memories

I send them out the door.

With great hope and expectations

for what next year holds in store.

WOW!!! I can’t believe that this is our last couple of days of school. What a wonderful year this has been. I have truly enjoyed having you all in my class this year. I have enjoyed watching you grow and change since September. Here are a few reminders for our short week.

1. 2nd GRADE CELEBRATION: We will be having our Second Grade Bash at Somerset Pool on Monday and so far the weather looks wonderful. Please make sure that your child wears their swimsuit to school under their clothes. Everyone must have a swimsuit in order to go in the pool, no shorts will be allowed. Please make sure that your child brings a bag with them that has their towel and a water bottle in it. If you would like your child to wear sunscreen, please apply it before they come to school. We will be grilling hot dogs there, so there is no need to send a lunch, unless your child will not be eating the lunch that is being provided. Please bring a snack, we will be eating them before we leave the school. If you are coming to be a chaperone, please be to school by 9:50, we will be walking to the pool shortly after that.

2. FIELD DAY: We will be participating in field day on Tuesday. Please have your child wear their second grade t-shirt to school that day. Also, please send a water bottle to school with your child. We will be outside for most of the morning and the children will get thirsty. If you would like your child to wear sunscreen, please apply it before they come to school. Please send a snack, we will be taking a break and eating in the morning.

3. LAST DAY OF SCHOOL: Tuesday will be the last day of school. It is a half day and dismissal will be at 12:00. Backpacks will not be allowed at school that day. Your child will be bringing home their report card, so please watch for it to come home that day.

Today, we met for the last time with our fourth grade book buddies from Mrs. Zombo’s class. We got to play with them out on the playground and eat Popsicles. We really enjoyed meeting every couple of weeks with them and wish them good luck in fifth grade next year.

Sydney was our class winner for earning the most Smile Tickets this year. Students earn Smile Tickets in our class and in special’s classes for following the 3R’s….being respectful, being responsible, and being ready!!! She got to go down today with the other Smile Ticket winners for a special pizza lunch with Mr. Z. Sydney, we are so proud of you for earning so many Smile Tickets!!!! Way to go!!!!

I also found this really cool site with some more animal games. It is called Switcheroo Zoo. You can make your own new animals, build an on-line habitat, play a “Where Do I Live?” game, sort animals by what they eat, do some animal puzzles and more. I just found this great animal characteristics sorting game. It goes along perfect with our animal unit. You have to sort animal characteristics into their correct group; mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians, and fish. Just click on the picture below to get to the sorting games. You can also click here and it will take you to a website that has several different animal games.  Try them out and leave us a comment and let us know what you think of  them!!!

On Friday, we went outside with our tape measures and clipboards and practiced measuring by measuring outdoor items. It was a great way to finish up our unit on measuring!!

1. MAMMAL TEST: We will be testing on our final animal group on Thursday. A review packet should have come home yesterday.

2. MATH TEST: We will be having our Unit 9 math test on Thursday. Watch for review sheets to come home on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please make sure your child studies for this test.

3. READING LOGS: There will be no more reading homework and reading logs no longer need to be signed. However, I STRONGLY URGE students to continue reading for at least 20 minutes a day over the summer so that they do not go down any reading levels.

4. END OF THE YEAR CELEBRATION: On Monday, June 13th we will be celebrating our year together and the end of a terrific school year at Somerset Pool. Please make sure that your child brings a backpack that day with a  towel, hat, sunglasses, and water bottle in it. If you want your child to wear sunscreen, please apply it before they com to school. We will be gone from 10:00-2:00. Children may wear flip flops to the pool but need tennis shoes to wear at school before and after the trip. If your child is not eating the lunch that is being provided, please make sure that they bring a lunch to take with them. If you are coming with us, please be to school by 9:50. Thanks!!!
