September 21, 2012: Mystery Reader

Today, we had our first Mystery Reader. All of the students were VERY excited to find out that our principal, Mr. Metty was our first Mystery Reader. He read us two wonderful stories, A Crazy Day at the Critter Cafe and Joseph Had a Little Overcoat. A very BIG thank you to Mr. Metty for coming in and reading to us today!!

September 21, 2012: Book Treasure Book

Today, we started doing our Book Treasure Books. Our first story was Owen, by Kevin Henkes. Your child should have brought home their brown envelope, a retelling sheet and a little yellow felt square. The yellow felt square is the Book Treasure. It is to help your child remember the story. They need to do a written retelling of the story on the sheet that they brought home. The retelling sheet and envelope are due back to school by Tuesday. The yellow felt square should be kept in their treasure boxes at home. If your child does not return the retelling sheet and envelope next week, they will not get the next book treasure. If your child would like to listen to the story again, just click the play button below. If you would like to see a picture of us with our treasure chests, just click on “treasure chest” over on the left hand side under “Pages”.

September 21, 2012: Treasure Books

Today we got to decorate our treasure books. We brought in stickers, pictures, and words to glue on our notebooks. These will be our writing notebooks. We will be putting all of our “treasured” stories in them. We are so excited to start using them. Here are some pictures of us decorating them. If you would like to see a picture of us with our finished products, click on Treasure Books, over on the left hand side, under pages.

September 21, 2012: Mystery Reader

We will be having a Mystery Reader come in to read to us beginning in October. We usually have the Mystery Reader come at 12:45 on Fridays. It can be parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, big brothers/sisters or anyone else that might want to read to us. Below is a list of a few of the dates that are still open. If you are interested, or have a family member that is interested, please let me know by sending me an email or a note in your child’s green folder. Remember that it is a secret, so please don’t let your child know that you are coming. We have several more dates available after Christmas, and I will be posting them later in the year.

OPEN DATES: Oct. 19 & 26, Nov. 16 & 30, Dec. 7 & 14

THANKS!!!

September 21, 2012: Read to Self

The first week of school we began learning the daily routines associated with doing “The Daily 5″. We started out learning about Read to Self time. This is a sustained silent reading time. Students read books from their individual book baskets. They are allowed to read almost anywhere in the room. They may choose to sit on the bench, the cubes, or the little chairs. They may also take a folding chair, a fuzzy rug, a cushion or a stool to any spot in the room. Once in their special spot, students begin to read. We are working on our stamina!!! We started off at about 10 minutes, and this week we made it to 22 minutes. We will work our way up to about 35-40 minutes in the next few weeks.  Please ask your child about Read to Self and ask where their  favorite spot to read this week was. Here are some pictures of us in our special spots!!

September 21, 2012: Book Buddies

Last Friday we got to meet our Book Buddies for the first time. We are buddies with Mrs. Arnold’s fourth grade class. We met them outside and we each got a questionnaire sheet. We spent several minutes asking each other the questions. Then, we got to go play on the playground with our buddies for a few minutes. We will be meeting with our buddies every 2 weeks or so. We will be doing some projects, playing math games, and of course reading. We were all very excited and can’t wait until we meet again!!
