October 12, 2013: Book Treasure Book

This week our Book Treasure book was, The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything, written by Linda Williams. On Friday, your child should have brought home their retelling sheet and their Book Treasure envelope. The treasure this week was made by the students, it’s a standing forest with the things that the little old lady saw, glued on in the order that she saw them. They also have a puppet of the little old lady to move through the forest.  Please make sure that the retelling sheet and envelope  are returned to school by next Tuesday. I have included a podcast of the story below. If you would like to listen to the story, please click on the title. Thanks and enjoy listening to your chid’s retelling of the story.

October 10, 2013: Exploring the Effect of Rain

Today we explored what kind of effect the rain has on different landforms. We got into groups of 4-5 and built either a mountain, hill or plateau in our sand trays. Then, we simulated rain with a cup of water and  a smaller cup with holes in it. We gently poured the water into the cup with holes and observed what was happening to our landforms. Take a look at us in action!!!

October 9, 2013: Magic Show

Our second grade monthly incentive goal for the month of September was to have their behavior cards stay on green. They could only flip to yellow twice to earn the prize, which was a magic show. Well, everyone met the goal and today Doug Sheer came to Eisenhower and put on a wonderful magic show. Congratulations to everyone for meeting the goal! October’s goal is homework. You can only have up to two missing/late assignments for the month of October. The prize is going to a movie at Fraser High School in November.

October 9, 2013: Adjective Witches

Last week we began learning about adjectives. On Friday, we brainstormed a list of adjectives that would describe a witch. Then, we made our own witches and added 5 adjectives that described them. Click on the picture if you would like to see the entire picture. Here are a few examples:

October 7, 2013: Spelling~Unit 5

A spelling homework paper should have also come home today. This week’s skill is working with silent letters. Spelling homework is due by Friday. October 7, 2013: Witch Fingers

Today some of the reading groups got to use “witch fingers” to help track print as they were reading with me at reading groups. It quickly became a favorite and other groups were asking if they could use them!!!

October 7, 2013: Read With a Partner

Last week we began doing the third aspect of The Daily 5, Read With a Partner.  We learned how to pick a partner and how to sit EEKK (elbow to elbow, knee to knee). As we read with our partner we learned how to ask them to stop and check for understanding. We were each given a wooden checkmark with, “who, what, where”, written on it. The checkmark is to keep in our book baskets and is suppose to help remind us to stop our partner and check for understanding. Eventually, the kids will be able to use question rings and Beachball Bookmarks to help check their partners for comprehension.
