November 3, 2014: Sticky Note Thinking

Today we began to use sticky notes to think about our reading. Students were given a sticky notes reference sheet and a pad of sticky notes to keep in their book baskets. They were also given a Sticky Note Thinking sheet. They had to do 4 sticky notes during Read to Self time. They sticky noted things such as: favorite part, a prediction, a question, a word that they didn’t know, an interesting word, and more. Take a look at some of our thinking! Just click on the picture to see a bigger view of it.

November 3, 2014: Word Work

Today I introduced the last aspect of The Daily Five, Word Work. During Word Work, students work with spelling words, word wall words, and vocabulary words. Word study allows students to experiment with words, memorize high-frequency words, generalize spelling patterns, and add to their knowledge and curiosity of unique and interesting words. Students pick a tub (activity) to take back to their seat or a quiet spot in the room. Tub activities include using play-doh, Scrabble tiles, wikki sticks, magna doodles, letter tiles, puzzles, stamps and many more.

November 2, 2014: Pic Collage Project

Last week we did an “I am Thankful For” project in an app called Pic Collage. The kids had to think of 4 things that they were thankful for. They had to find pictures to represent each thing then they had to label each one. I put all of our Pic Collages in a slide show on our classroom weebly. If you would like to see them, just click on the picture below.

November 2, 2014: Pumpkin Math

We were excited last week when we got to do something with the pumpkins that have been sitting on our tables for the past few weeks. We did some “pumpkin math.” We worked in small groups to explore our pumpkins. First, we did some predicting. We predicted our pumpkin’s weight, height, distance around, length of the stem, and how many ribs they had. Then we got to measure with tape measures and used a scale to weigh our pumpkins. Some of us were really good at our predicting. Here are a few pictures!!
