We have been reading books and discussing the theme of tolerance. Last week we read the book Tacky the Penguin. Tacky was an odd bird, very unlike his friends. Tacky wore a wild and crazy Hawaiian shirt-the children took home a plain white t-shirt and designed their “tacky” shirt.
Tell me about your favorite vacation! Where did you go and what did you do?
I will go first! We took a family vacation to Mexico when the girls were younger. The best part was laying by the pool reading and watching the kids swim. We also took the kids horseback riding on the beach-such fun!!!
Friday was the our first Math Club meeting hosted by Mrs. Short and myself. This week we concentrated on geometry. The session started with a reading of the book The Greedy Triangle followed by a group activity with licorice. We then broke off into 6 centers. The centers included: making 2D shapes on the table with shaving cream, shape riddle books with a partner, a geometry mystery box, a geometry board game, making shapes on the geoboards, and we made 3D shapes with sticks and spheres. Everyone took home a packet that contained 3 geometry games to play at home with their families.
Since the next 2 weeks are short weeks I am planning on covering just one spelling unit. Preview given Tuesday Jan. 19th. and the test will be the following Wednesday Jan. 27th. The weekly homework will be due Tuesday Jan 26th.

We have started our new science unit on weather. We will be learning about different types of weather and clouds and the water cycle. The MSU extension program is coming into our classroom on Jan. 22nd to teach us about water and the water cycle.
We read our first treasure book of the new year this week. Please keep an eye out for the envelope to come home and spend a few minutes having your child retell the story to you. Being able to retell a story is a very important skill in second grade. The treasure book sheet is due back 2 days after the story was read. Make sure your child fills out the form and does their best job.
Everyday we work on reading and writing. During Daily 5 sessions your child has the opportunity to choose what they would like to work on. They can choose from read to themselves, read to a partner, write about reading, listen to reading or word work. The children look forward to the Read to yourself session of Daily 5. While they are reading they work on CAFE skills. CAFE stands for comprehension, accuracy, fluency and
expanded vocabulary. Ask your child
what skill they are working
on this week.
