SPELLING-This week we start Unit 15-the R family. We have learned that the best spelling for the /er/ sound is er. There are five spellings for the /er/ sound (er, ir, ur, ar, or), but the best spelling is er. The spelling words for this week are:

It is important that students spell multisyllable words by syllable spelling. In order to avoid errors, it is important that student hear and then spell each syllable separately. For example, different has three syllables; dif-fer-ent. As students spell the word, s/he says each syllable.
MATH-This week we are starting Unit 6. This unit will focus on number stories, subtraction with and without regrouping and expose the children to multiplication arrays.
SOCIAL STUDIES-We are also starting the needs and wants social studies unit this week. On Feb. 24th we will be going on a field trip to Morley Candy Factory to visit a factory and see a production line.
READ ACROSS THE PLANET-On Febuary 23rd we will be participating in Read Across the Planet. This program connects classrooms across the planet to celebrate reading. We will be connecting with a 2nd grade from Minnesota.
VALENTINE PARTY-The Valentine party will be Monday, Feb. 14th. Last week a note went home with all the children’s names for Valentine cards. You are welcome to send in a treat for our party-we have 27 students!!

100th DAY OF SCHOOL-We will celebrate the 100th day of school on Tues., February 15th. Make sure to send in your 100 collection by then!
