A Peek at the Week

SPELLING-This week’s spelling words are: Then, them, out, she, many. Please continue practicing spelling words nightly. The skill of the week is digraphs-ch, th, sh, and wh sounds. 

READING-This week we will be starting Listening to Reading. I have 10 MP3 players loaded with books on tape. The children have the opportunity to listen to fluent readers. By listening to good reading children become fluent readers themselves. 

MATH-This week we will be starting unit 2. This unit focuses on addition and subtraction, fact families, frames and arrows, and “what’s my rule?”.  Please continue to practice simple addition facts, the children need to have “fact power”. We take a mad minute test everyday- the children are expected to be able to finish 30 simple addition problems in 2 min.

Social Studies-We are having our community test on Monday. As a cumulating activity we will be going on a field trip Tues. Oct. 9th. On our Walk thru Fraser we will visit the library, fire station, Fort Fraser and finally El Charro’s restaurant for lunch. Make sure permission slip and money are turned in by Fri. Oct 5th.


Second Grade Treasures

Today we shared our treasure boxes. The kids did a great job decorating their boxes! Tomorrow I am going to read their first book treasure. Your child will be bringing home a book treasure and response sheet. Please discuss the story with your child and have them retell the story on the response form. Forms are due on Mondays. If your child has trouble recalling the story click on the book treasure tab on the left to view/listen to the story.


Reading with a Partner

This week we started reading with a partner during Daily 5. The children really enjoy this activity. They get to practice their fluency and work on comprehension skills. 

Working on Treasure Book

Last week we made our treasure books. The treasure book is journal that the children will be using to write their thoughts, ideas and stories. We covered the journal with special things that are importent to us!! I can’t wait to read all the stories they will tell!

A Peek at the Week-September 24th

SPELLING-This weeks spelling words are: will, each, about, how, up. The skill we will be focusing on is “ou” and “ow” spelling pattern. Please continue to practice the spelling words nightly. Take a peek at spelling city website-you can practice your words on a fun way! the web site is in the left column. 

READING-This week we are going to work on some comprehension skills-predictions and wonderings. Thinking about text helps us better understand what is happening. 

MATH-We finished up Unit 1 and are going to review for the test the rest of the week. The test is planned for Friday Sept. 28th. Look for review sheets to study from!

SOCIAL STUDIES-We are also finishing up our communities unit this week. A review sheet will come home Thursday. The test is planned for Monday Oct. 1st.

TREASURE BOXES-I can’t wait to see all the wonderful boxes everyone has created! Some of them have started coming in. We will share the boxes with each other Thursday. On Friday I will read their first Book treasure. We will enjoy a story and get a souvenir to help us remember the story. Over the weekend have your child retell the story to you and write down their retelling. Eventually the children will need to write their own retelling. If your child has difficulty remembering the story go into the book treasure archives on the left collumn and find the weeks story to listen to again.
