RAZ-KIDS

Our title 1 has purchased a raz-kids account for every student k-2. I have set up an account for your child to use over the summer. The kids can listen to books, then read them on their own and take a comprehension quiz. I sent home a card with your child’s password on it. There is also a copy of the card attached to the summer packet coming home Monday. Below you will find the link to the Raz Kids site.

Field Trip to Deneweth’s Nursery

At the beginning of the month we went on a wonderful field trip to Deneweth’s. The children got a chance to see the entire nursery, even the back! We learned about their irrigation systems, how they package the plants and we even had the chance to plant a marigold.

Book Treasure-The Tiny Seed

One Friday I read the story The Tiny Seed By Eric Carle. The children really enjoyed this story and took home 3 seeds. I’m sure some insisted on planting them! I hope they grow.

A Peek at the End of the Year

It’s hard to believe it is the end of the year. The children have grown so much and I am very proud of all the work they have done this year. As we wrap things up I thought I would make you aware of the assessments coming up.

SPELLING-We will have weekly review tests. This week we tested the first 45 core words. A preview came home on Tuesday. Everyone will have their own individual spelling test on Friday with the words they got wrong on Monday. There will be 2 more review tests in the next two weeks.

READING-Thursday May 30th I will be testing their reading in the hall. I am testing for accuracy and also the ability to retell the story in order with lots of details. I am also looking for the children to give me the theme or authors message.

MATH-Unit 10 test is on Tuesday May 28th. Look for the review sheets to come home today and tomorrow. We will also have an end of year assessment the following week. Right now it is planned for Thursday June 6th this test will cover all the material from the year. Look for review sheets to come home next week.

WRITING-We are finishing up our expert non-fiction writing. The kids are really doing a nice job on them. We will celebrate with the entire 2nd grade on Wed. May 29th. The plan is to go outside share our writings and enjoy a Popsicle. The following week we will write a response to our theme books. The children need to tell how the characters did the right thing in one of the stories. This is the writing that will be graded for report cards.

SCIENCE-We are finishing up our planting unit and the test is planned for next Friday May 31st. Review sheet will come home on Wednesday.

END OF THE YEAR POOL PARTY-As a final activity second grade walks to Somerset pool and spends the day enjoying each other in the sun. Permission slips and waivers came home last week and are due on May 31st. Every parent that wants to attend is welcome!!

SPELLING-This week we are working on Unit 22. The spelling words for the week are: again, off went, old, number. The skill for the week is contractions. Spelling tests have 16 words now. Please go back and study past words.

READING-In reading we are working on Main Idea’s of stories or passages. When your child fills out their main idea page for their reading log please make sure they are writing about the most important things that are happening .

MATH-this week are are finishing up the fraction unit. Test is planned for this Friday. Review sheet came home today!

SOCIAL STUDIES-Needs and Wants test was planned for today. We were so engrossed with our writing unit….I totally forgot. Opps! We will have the test first thing tomorrow morning.

SCIENCE-We have started our planting unit. We will discover what plants need to survive and what they need to thrive.

WRITING-just before break we started another non-fiction unit. The children are going to write a book about what they are experts at. We have made the table of contents and are now writing our chapters. This week we are going to learn how to add in different text features to enhance our writing.
