How-To Videos

Our classes are talking about making “How-To” videos.

How-To Videos would give step by step directions for how to complete a task. The younger Techie Kids are thinking about time order words such as First, Next, and Last. They are also practicing following directions.

*
The older Techie Kids are considering storyboarding and how to create videos using tools like Photo Story 3 and Windows Movie Maker. Both of these tools are Free.

*
Here are our first 2 attempts at making a plan and filming our idea.

Our first video features Lauren as she shows us how-to draw a cartoon panda.

*

Next, we would like to share how-to find the area of a right triangle.

*

We are hoping to share more how-to videos soon. Thanks for watching!

What other how-to videos should we create next?

What tips or strategies could you share with us about making a quality video?

Do you have any storyboarding websites that you would recommend?

What how-to videos have you created?

  1. Hi Techie Kids – great videos!
I would like to suggest that the next video you make is ‘How to make a really whizzy video with fab titles and credits’! I think you did a super job there! Your panda was super-cute Lauren and Jacqueline & Savanna, you explained how to find the area of a right angled triangle very clearly.
We made some ‘how to make Christmas Decorations’ videos just before Christmas – we found it quite hard to keep them short and give precise instructions. What did you find hard about making your videos?
    Your friend,
    Mrs Monaghan

    • Dear Mrs. Monaghan,

Yes we did have some challanges in the making of this video. We will take making a whimsical video into concideration. The big challenges that we had were keeping the camera straight. We filmed these on our class’ iPads.

      Thank you for the comments.

      Sincerely,
      Alex for Techie kids

      • Dear Alex, Lauren, Savanna and Jacqueline
Thank you all for your comprehensive and well written replies. You are obviously an intelligent bunch! Do you know, I had been thinking more about the technical challenges of making the video, but you’re so right, it’s really important to have the right professional demeanor, and to fight the urge to giggle. We often giggle because we feel nervous, and being in front of a camera would make anyone nervous! I think the fact that I hadn’t considered that means that you did it so well I didn’t even have a hint that you might have had to think so carefully about your voice and your deportment.
        So well done!
        Mrs Monaghan

        • Dear Mrs. M,

How would your class feel about joining us in making how-to videos? What are your students most interested in? Could you create a video to teach us something? Videos really capture the attention of the Techie Kids. Our videos are not the polished product of people who’ve been studying movie production, but they are good beginnings that make us think about what it takes. We have already started to think about the background of the area we are filming and the quality of sound. We learned that an iPad is great to shoot quick videos, but the audio may not be the best when you are turned away from the device. We learned we can mute the original sound and record a better audio over it. Have any of your students made a video before? It would be fun to work on one together. 🙂

          From your movie making pal,
          Mrs. Moore

    • Dear Mrs. Monaghan,

Thank you so much for replying to our video. We had a lot of fun filming it. It ‘s very inspiring for me, as a drawer, to get so much positive feedback from people who liked the video. I hope this video helped whoever wants to know how to draw a panda.

To be honest, one of the main challenges when creating this video was not laughing when recording. I have never made a video that I knew would be posted, so it was a different experience for me. We edited the video by using Movie Maker. Thats how we got the title, credits, and effects. Just comment if you want me to go more in depth with the movie making process.

      Thanks Again,
      Lauren from Techie Kids

    • Dear Mrs.M,

I found it hard to speak clear and slow without laughing! It was a little hard also trying so finish everything in a short span of our class time! We were also running out of time to make the video. I tried not to talk to quietly on the video because I’m not a loud talker.

Thank you very much for commenting on our video. We really appreciate it.

      From,
      Savanna

    • Dear Mrs. M,

Thank you for commenting on our video. It was kinda hard making the video because we had to speak clearly and talk loud and I don’t really talk too loud. We had to make three scripts because we kept on messing up. It was a lot of fun making the video though.

  4. Hello 8th grade class,

This is Jack from the 7th grade. Those were some very cool videos. It looks like you put a lot of work and effort into making your how-to’s. That was a great panda Lauren. The video on how to find the right angle of a triangle was also good, Jacqueline and Savanna.

Some of us 7th graders are also making how-to videos. Both of the ideas use Google Earth. One of them tells you how to find the White House. The other project shows you how to find certain places around the world. This soon-to-be videos will be posted soon.

    From Kyle.

    • Dear Kyle,

Thanks so much for visiting and leaving us a comment! I love hearing that we’ve sparked your interest and now you want to try too. I think a video showing step by step directions is really great for learning about something new.

If you made a how-to video, what would it be about?

      From,
      Mrs. Moore

  9. Hi Techie Kids,
I’m Eve from Middleham School, and I think that your panda cartoon was pretty amazing! I am going to try it out at home, I hope I can do it as well as you!
    From
    Eve

    • Dear Eve,

Thank you for your kind words! I’ll be sure to let Lauren know that you’ve left a comment for her. I’m sure you’ll do a great job with your illustration. What sorts of things do you enjoy drawing?

      From,

  10. Hi Techie Kids

I’m Will I thought your drawing was really good of the cartoon panda, and I also thought the panda looked really cute. Well done Lauren, Alex and Nolan.

    • Dear Will,

You are very encouraging! I’m glad you enjoyed their video. Have you ever seen a panda before? Can you tell me about the most interesting animal you’ve ever seen?

      From,
      Mrs. Moore

  11. Hi Techie Kids,
I’m Eleanor from Middleham School and I thought your vidio on how to make a cartoon panda was fab! I will try to make it at home it looks quite simple.Thats all from me bye.
    Eleanor

    • Dear Eleanor,

Thank you for visiting us and leaving a comment! It is fun to hear that you think the panda drawing looks simple. That let’s us know that the students explained each step clearly. We actually found it to be tricky to say everything out loud that our brain thought of automatically. Lauren, Nolan, and Alex wrote out the words to describe each step and practiced saying them before they recorded the video. Can you tell me about a time that you practiced something over and over?

      From,
      Mrs. Moore

    • Dear Eleanor,

We hope you have fun drawing the panda. This panda is quite easy to draw hope you have fun.

      From,

      Alex From Techie kids
