How-To: Tie Your Shoes
May 8th
Mrs. Moore went to an awesome education conference this past weekend called, EdCamp Detroit. It was full of amazing Michigan educators who love helping students learn! We had many great conversations and shared a whole bunch of cool ideas. When I told Mr. Medvinsky we were creating How-To videos, he shared a cool app with me called, SnapGuide. Guess what? I loved it and couldn’t wait to share it in class!

We jumped right in and made our first guide. Take a look at what our 1st graders created. Each photo is captioned and there are even videos at the end.

Have you used SnapGuide before?
How do you think you could use this tool?

How-To Videos
Apr 30th
Our classes are talking about making “How-To” videos.
How-To Videos would give step by step directions for how to complete a task. The younger Techie Kids are thinking about time order words such as First, Next, and Last. They are also practicing following directions.
*
The older Techie Kids are considering storyboarding and how to create videos using tools like Photo Story 3 and Windows Movie Maker. Both of these tools are Free.
*
Here are our first 2 attempts at making a plan and filming our idea.
Our first video features Lauren as she shows us how-to draw a cartoon panda.
*
Next, we would like to share how-to find the area of a right triangle.
*
We are hoping to share more how-to videos soon. Thanks for watching!

What other how-to videos should we create next?
What tips or strategies could you share with us about making a quality video?
Do you have any storyboarding websites that you would recommend?
What how-to videos have you created?

Ballet: A Student Post by Emily & Claire for Mr. Mannell
Apr 26th
This is a student post by Emily and Claire for Mr. Mannell (and a short video for all of our readers!)
You can visit Mr. Mannell’s site, Extended Comments for Students, by clicking here.

We are so thankful for the video you sent us! The student performers did a great job! We can tell they had practiced.
The costumes were magnificent. We loved the way they portrayed their characters. We noticed their feet were pointed and this showed their marvelous technique. We liked how they expressed their character. This interpretation seemed less traditional and formal than other ballets we’ve seen. It made the story more unique and interesting. We also have to applaud the choreographer for being able to pull it all together in a beautiful production.
As part of our thank you, we would like to share a little bit of ballet foundation with our readers. Please enjoy our short video of ballet’s basic feet technique.

Mail from Mr. Mannell
Apr 3rd
Today, the Techie Kids had a wonderful surprise! We received a package in the mail from the fabulous, Mr. Mannell (@RossMannell). He has been doing an amazing job of supporting my 3rd through 8th grade bloggers.
Here are the first comments that we shared on our Winter in Michigan post.
*
Here are the links to additional posts that were kicked off by these comments. Please explore them! I’m sure you will love them as much as we have!
*
We were thrilled when we opened the Australian package and found a book, Wombat’s Secret, a wombat figurine, and a token from Potoroo Palace, an animal sanctuary where Mr. Mannell took many of his incredible animal photographs.
*
Here are some of the amazing images taken by Mr. Mannell that he shared with us and gave us permission to use.
.
We found out that it took 14 days to travel from New South Wales, Australia to Michigan, USA. If the package could travel in a straight line, the total distance traveled would be about 9,600 miles.

Mrs. Moore is an Indiana Jones fan, so she was excited to share this Google Map, Treasure Map style!

Since Australian animals were a big focus of many comments and posts, we’d like to share some pictures of animals in our area with you. Click on the book cover below to read our Michigan Animals book.

Notable Michiganders
Mar 15th
As part of our Michigan studies in 3rd grade, we have practiced our research skills to find some well-known people from Michigan. When the Techie Kids took a look at some of the biographies, they chose a person that caught their attention. Each child created a “cereal box” design featuring their famous person. They also shared something about them that they learned or felt was important.
We are pretty sure that you’ve probably heard a few of their names before. Take a look…
