What We’ve Been Up To

We haven’t been on our blog as much as we’d like, but we have been very busy with other areas of technology. Here’s an update…

The Techie Kids have all been hard at work learning about Microsoft Excel. We learned that this program can be very useful for helping us organize information. We loved finding out that Excel can solve Math problems for us if we know the formulas to enter. It was also very cool to see how easy it was to put graphs into our spreadsheets to show a picture of our data. The 1st and 2nd grade students worked together to create a spreadsheet that showed what transportation brought us to school. The 3rd graders gathered and organized data about their Favorite Pets or Favorite Zoo Animals. The 4th graders are still hard at work on their Favorite Ice Cream workbook. They have learned formulas for adding a range of numbers and for finding out what percentage of the total votes each flavor received. The 5th graders have created an All-Star Class gradebook. They have also learned how to write a formula that will add the values in select cells together. Additionally, they have practiced using the first set of values to find an average. Both groups are learning to select a range of data and create a coordinating graph. This allowed us to practice reading and interpreting charts too. We will share some examples soon.

Explore Google Docs from home and try out their online spreadsheets. Compare this program to MS Excel and share what you think.

Our 2 Kindergarten classes have been learning about their letters and sounds in a very special way. We are making our first video! It will be shared with you all very soon.

If that weren’t enough, the 1st and 2nd graders also tried out some new skills through one of our favorite programs, Kid Pix 4. We talked about our Math terms, Slides and Flips. Each student used the outline of a mitten or a picture they drew themselves as the object to flip or slide. In order to make their original picture move, they learned about the very valuable technology steps, Edit/Copy-Edit/Paste. The children were amazed to learn they could make a copy of their work. Take a look at some of our projects.

Have you ever made a spreadsheet? Tell us about it.

When is it valuable to know how to Copy and Paste?
